Benin began producing a modest amount of oil at sea in October 1982. Production ceased in recent years but exploration of new locations is ongoing. A modest fishing fleet provides fish and shrimp for local subsistence and export to Europe.The GPD nominal per capita is estimated in 1,500$.
The regions with the greater gross income are Atlantique, Ouémé and Littoral, bordering regions with Atlantic Ocean. The regions with mid-level ingress are Couffo, Mono, Colines, Plateau, and Borgou, while the Donga, Alibori and Atakora regions of Benin showing a lower gross income below country's average level. If we compare with Africa, Benin has half of ingress gross less than that of Africa.
