Warsaw is the capital and largest city of Poland. It is located on the Vistula River roughly 260 kilometres from the Baltic Sea and 300 kilometres from the Carpathian Mountains. Its population as of June 2010 was estimated at 1,716,855, and the Warsaw metropolitan area at approximately 2,631,902. The area of the city covers 516.9 square kilometres, while the city's agglomeration covers 6,100.43 square kilometres. Warsaw is the 9th largest city in the European Union by population.
